Theo was an excellent driver, handling the Porsche like a race car driver. Before I knew it, I was smiling and laughing as he raced up and down the hills making the bottom drop out of my stomach the way it did when Cami would take me for drives when I was a kid.

Once we reached a spot overlooking the river, Theo stopped and we got out. I’d grown up in Harper’s Ferry and had never been to this spot. Then again, I never had a reason to come to this section of town, where all the elite families of Harper’s Ferry lived overlooking the city. It was beautiful. The river was calm and still under a gorgeous full moon with the sound of crickets and the crunch of our footsteps through the gravel cutting through the silence.

“I’ve never been here before. This is gorgeous.”

“Yeah, I come here a lot when I need to clear my head and think. Lately I’ve been here a lot.”

“Is this about your sister?”

He nodded and continued to stare out across the river with an unreadable look on his face, half of it cast in shadow, since the only light illuminating the spot we were in was from the moon.

“Mrs. Manning still giving you grief about wanting to move Belle?”

“I haven’t told her that I found a specialist for her to see in Louisville. She has an appointment next week. Now I just have to figure out how to get her there behind Mrs. Manning’s back.”

“I don’t mean to sound like a snob, but doesn’t Mrs. Manning work for you and your family? You have every right to do what you feel is best for your sister.”

“It’s a lot more complicated than that.”

I waited for him to expand but he didn’t, and something told me to leave it alone. Besides, I was still trying to figure out how to bring up what I’d found in the library. He needed to know that something that belonged to a woman killed on the road behind his estate was found in his house. Something was holding me back. I kicked myself because I knew exactly what it was. I was so attracted to this man I couldn’t believe that he could’ve possibly done anything wrong to Cherise Gamble or anyone else. I remembered it was called the halo effect, from one of my psychology classes during my undergrad years at Ohio University. Today we called it pretty privilege where society is biased toward attractive people, assuming they have good qualities simply for being attractive. I was doing the same damned thing. It was a good thing I didn’t feel threatened by Theo because here I was in the middle of the night several miles away from the estate, alone with him. But all I could think about was when he touched my cheek the other night, wondering what it would feel like if he’d done more.

“Sabrina? Earth to Sabrina.”

“I’m sorry, what did you say?”

He laughed. It was a deep throated rumble that turned my insides to mush.
